September 3, 2008: [murmur] in the Junction

[murmur] is launching in Toronto's Junction neighbourhood as part of the Junction Arts Festival. We've collected an incredible number of amazing stories, and will be adding more signs through the fall...

July 25, 2008: [murmur] Galway

[murmur] ears went up today in Galway, Ireland! You can listen to the stories here -- and more signs and stories will be going up before long. Thank you to Tomás Hardiman and Parzival Productions!

July 17, 2008: [murmur]'s 5th birthday

Don't they grow up fast? It doesn't seem like it was five years ago that we put up the first [murmur] signs in Kensington Market, in the middle of the night and hoping that we wouldn't need to explain ourselves to anyone in uniform. (We've learned that putting the signs up during the day draws much less unwanted attention.)

But since then somehow we've put up about 250 signs in 8 cities in 5 countries. And collected something like 600 stories. With dozens of partners, and um, a lot of volunteers. Ever-humble, we say: Wow!

So, we're throwing a birthday party for our little project. If you can make it, we'd love to see you. Doubly so if you've participated as a story collector or story contributor -- it'd be nice to thank you in person.=

The party will be on July 17th -- that's a Thursday -- at the Canadian Corps hall at 201 Niagara, just south of King St., in Toronto. If you haven't been before, the hall will remind you of family reunions that you had, or that you imagined that you might've had if your family was from southern Ontario.

You won't need to spend any money (no gifts please), unless you'd like to buy a drink, which will be cheap. And why not? Let's raise a glass to celebrate this moment, and one five years ago.

July 12, 2008: Big Stories, Little India launch party

Last year we worked with SAVAC (the South Asian Visual Arts Centre) to collect stories about that part of Gerrard Street East called "Little India". It's one of the oldest South Asian neighbourhoods in North America, and while its heyday has passed, on weekend nights in the summer it's one of the liveliest places in the city. This year we worked on a web site, documenting a little about the neighbourhood, and the work of the artists who were commissioned by SAVAC. The site is launching on July 12th, and we're having a party to celebrate. It's at the Centre of Gravity, a circus school on the west edge of Little India, at 1300 Gerrard East. It's from 4-6PM on Saturday, July 12th. There'll be free food, a funny MC and music by DJ Zahra. The website: http://savac.net/littleindia

2007-2009: Playwrights Guild of Canada and [murmur] partnering on Uth Ink project.

U – Youth, Young people, YOU and your ideas

th - A street address (4th street), a destination, a public place

Ink – Recording words, preserving our cultural perspectives

Over the next three years, twenty communities across Canada will invite 900 young people aged 12-20 to be inspired and instructed by professional playwrights, working towards the creation and development of their own plays, using “community” as a theme. Then, using [murmur]’s internationally acclaimed oral history project as inspiration, each youth’s play will be recorded, posted online, and developed into a site-specific theatre installation in the young playwright’s own community.

Uth Ink will be led by Robin Sokoloski, Outreach and Communications Manager of Playwrights Guild of Canada, and [murmur]. Together they will establish a unique opportunity to give young people a lasting voice in their communities while providing a professional artistic experience.

To receive more information about the artists, art organizations or Uth Ink, or to make a charitable donation to support the program, please contact:

September 9 - October 4, 2007: Walking Life exhibit at Gladstone Hotel

[murmur] is participating in an exhibit on Walking at the Gladstone Hotel. "The goals for Walking Life are quite simple. First and foremost, we hope to generate excitement about walking. We’d like to inspire people to reclaim (aka: use!) the sidewalks as public space. We’d like to inspire people to think about the pedestrian experience. And, we’d like people to contemplate the environments in which they walk. We have asked people of all kinds to convey their experiences through art, because the creative process has the potential to stimulate contemplation, interesting discussion and even innovation".

August 20, 2007: Big Stories, Little India: [murmur] on Gerrard Street East

Big Stories, Little India presents a rare opportunity to hear first-hand narrative accounts about the Gerrard Street neighborhood and to view contemporary art projects inspired by these stories. Initiated by SAVAC in partnership with [murmur], this project engages aspects of oral history alongside the process of art making. Artists Ambereen Siddiqui, Amin Rehman, Avantika Bawa, Brendan Fernandes, Rashmi Varma and Zaheed Mawani use a variety of approaches to visualize the stories of South Asian immigrants to the neighborhood. Launching on August 25th, Big Stories, Little India highlights the best-kept secrets of the Gerrard India Bazaar.

Opening: August 25th, 4:00 PM, patio of Lahore Tikka House, 1365 Gerrard St. East
Art Installations: August 25th to September 8th 2007

June 8, 2007: [murmur] Fort York launch

June 7, 2007: [murmur] Edinburgh launch
The official launch party for [murmur] in Leith is today at Iso Bar in Leith, at 7pm. If you're in the area, please join us!

April 24, 2007: [murmur] Dublin Docklands
We are pleased to announce the upcoming launch of [murmur] Dublin Docklands on the May 4th weekend. For the past few months we've been recording stories that take place in the rapidly redeveloping Dublin Docklands area. This project has placed a particular interest in stories from seniors, as it was commissioned by the Bealtaine Festival, Ireland's national festival celebrating creativity in older age. Stories range from current events, life during World War II, and even stories told by a descendant of a 1916 Easter Uprising leader. [murmur] Dublin Docklands is grateful for the support of the Dublin Docklands Development Authority, The Arts Council / An Chomhairle Ealaíon, and Age & Opportunity, the Irish national agency behind the Bealtaine festival.

February, 2007: [murmur] travels … and nests!

[murmur] in Leith!
[murmur] is please to announce the launch of our first trans-Atlantic project in Leith, Scotland. Over twenty [murmur] signs have recently gone up in and around Leith, the waterfront district of Edinburgh. We had a great time meeting and recording Leithers in late summer, and have since been working with a group of very dedicated local volunteers who have also been recording folks. If you won't be visiting Leith with your mobile phone anytime soon, you can listen to the stories through the website: here. We will continue to record and add stories and locations, building up to a second launch in June, when [murmur] will be part of the Six Cities Design Festival (six-cities.com). If you'd like, read an Edinburgh Evening News article about the Leith [murmur] here.

[murmur] in Leith is produced in partnership with New Media Scotland, an organization that supports experimentation by practitioners in art and technology. Through working with and supporting the presentation of work by artists in this field, New Media Scotland hopes to foster greater public understanding of the role that technology is playing in contemporary culture. New Media Scotland is core funded by the Scottish Arts Council, and [murmur] in Leith is supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund and the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation.

[murmur] in San Jose!
In August we visited San Jose, California, and set up [murmur] there as part of ZeroOne San Jose: A Global Festival of Art on the Edge. We were able to record stories and establish sign locations quickly with the help of a group of extremely friendly and dedicated San Jose folks who love and care about their city. You can listen to the stories here: ( sanjose.murmur.info . [murmur] in San Jose was produced with the assistance of the ( CFC Media Lab (formerly Habitat New Media Lab) in Toronto, the good place where [murmur] was initially developed back in 2002.

[murmur] at Fort York!
We're excited to announce we're currently at work again in Toronto, this time in and around historic Fort York. We're looking for stories from inside the Fort as well as in the surrounding neighbourhood. We're particularly interested in stories that show how connected the Fort is to the rest of Toronto, and want to talk to anybody who has something to say about either the Fort or surrounding neighbourhood. While we are looking for people who can share "historic" information they might know about, say, the War of 1812 or some of the Fort's lost buildings, we're also interested in more recent or personal history people have with the area. Get in touch with us with whatever ideas you might have. Fort York [murmur] will launch in the spring.

[murmur] at the Art Gallery of Ontario!
In December and January, [murmur] partnered with the AGO in Toronto on a pilot project, bringing cellphones into the gallery for the first time. Three works in "The Future Now" exhibition each had its own phone number, featuring three different perspectives on each work by three different people. The project was fun to put together, and was very heavily used! We're now analyzing the results with the AGO, and hope to work with them again on similar projects!

[murmur] nests at the Centre for Social Innovation!
After years of wandering the wilderness of Toronto's kitchen tables, tiny bedroom desks and Wi-Fi enabled cafes, [murmur] is moving into its very own office at the Centre for Social Innovation at 215 Spadina Avenue. The CSI is a nonprofit social enterprise with a mission to foster collaboration and entrepreneurialism across the social and arts sector, letting those organizations share office overhead and (literally) get out of the closet and work around other exciting and dedicated tenants.

Last but not least … [murmur] needs you!
[murmur] is looking for volunteers to find, record and possibly edit stories for the new projects that we're cooking up, as well as our existing ones. If you want experience in what amounts to a mix of radio documentary, cultural anthropology, journalism and sidewalk-sleuthing, please contact us. The hardest part of doing [murmur] is finding people who can talk about locations, tell their stories and share their memories, so we're looking for a few dedicated helpers who enjoy poking around and finding those people! There are lots of different volunteer opportunities, so don't worry if you've never done this sort of thing before - we promise it won't hurt a bit! Contact Katarina Collins, our volunteer coordinator at kat@murmur.info, to find out more about the new projects we've got in store for 2007!

October, 2006: [murmur] listens to the Human River
Attention Storytellers! The Toronto Public Space Committee is holding the second annual Human River on Sunday October the 15th and we are looking for people to tell us the stories of Garrison Creek. Narratives can range from personal experiences and histories, to urban architecture and ancient geography. We are looking for tales to evoke through performances as we trace the winding path of the Garrison through bustling neighbourhoods and quiet green spaces in downtown Toronto. There are also opportunities to submit stories to our partners: Lost Rivers and [murmur] - recording these histories and legends of the creek for future retellings. If you have stories, questions or a love of performing, please contact georgia@publicspace.ca.

August 02, 2006: [murmur] goes literary!

Take a bus up to Bathurst and Lawrence and allow John Lorinc to show you the hidden uTOpia of the semi-urban plaza, or pause among the bustle at Yonge and Bloor to hear Dionne Brand tell you What We All Long For. Over the weekend, you can roam the public spaces of the Convention Centre and interact with a variety of electronic-ish art projects. The exhibits are all in the south building. Our ears are located in various areas of the centre. They're five feet tall, so you can't miss them. For the first time, we’re letting people leave their stories using their own cell phone.

Oct 15, 2005: [murmur] to launch on Spadina Oct 20th
Please join us next Thursday Oct 20th at Grossman's Tavern (379 Spadina Avenue at Cecil) from 6-9pm for a (free) reception celebrating the launch of our Spadina project with 50 new sites along the street. We've been recording Torontonians over the past few months telling parts of Spadina's story in their own words. Some of the stories are anecdotal, other times historic, but always heartfelt. Listen to a tale of sneaking into the Pickford Theatre at Queen and Spadina in the 1920s, ghost stories at the Bright Pearl restaurant and what it's like to live on the 22nd floor, high above the street at 666 Spadina. This is just the start though – [murmur] will continue to add stories, so it's never too late to contact us and share your thoughts and memories of Spadina, Kensington or the Annex – or to put us in touch with somebody who does. [murmur] on Spadina is part of Toronto's Live With Culture program, and we have partnered with the Chinese Canadian National Council of Toronto to help gather stories from the local Chinese community. If you feel a group is underrepresented in Toronto's history, please put us in contact with the people who can help us find those storytellers. But do join us on Thursday at one of Toronto's historic music venues (and [murmur] story site) and pick up our brand new Spadina map/guide illustrated by Marlena Zuber (the artist behind both our Kensington and Annex maps).
